The Jubilee Hall stands in Bargate Street, Brewood at the centre of the village – just a few yards from the Market Place.
On 7 April 1935, the former Angel Hotel (dating from about 1800) was purchased from W Butler & Co Ltd (brewery) by Major R Monckton. The hall was created out of the clubroom at the western end of the Angel, which was demolished the same year – the Jubilee year of King George V.
F G Kirk of Four Ashes built the hall to designs by Lavender & Twentyman at a cost of £2,700. The land had been bought from Butlers Brewery in Wolverhampton for £300. This included the old stables and an old cottage in the yard.
The Brewood Village Community Council was formed in April 1935 to establish a Village Hall for the people of Brewood to commemorate the Jubilee of King George V; the hall opened the following year in January 1936.
Brewood Village Community Council (BVCC) is governed by a Trust Deed dated 4 March 1938, the date Major Monckton donated the site to the “Inhabitants of the Parish of Brewood” for use as a village hall. When BVCC was established as the Committee of Management for the Jubilee Hall, Lloyds Bank was one of the original Trustees – but later relinquished this responsibility.
The Trust Deed stated the premises “shall be held upon trust for the purposes of physical and mental recreation rooms, library, lectures, classes, recreations and entertainments or otherwise – as may be found expedient for the benefit of the inhabitants of the Parish of Brewood in the County of Staffordshire and its immediate vicinity without the distinction of gender or political, religious or other opinion”.
The hall is used for a variety of activities: WI Groups, indoor bowling, bridge, cinema, live music concerts and is available for private hire for functions such as children’s parties, wedding receptions and other village social functions and fundraising activities.
An Annual General Meeting (AGM) is held in April and half-yearly Council meetings in April and October – all affiliated member groups are invited to attend, along with the general public for the AGM.
Despite many changes and refurbishments over the years, Brewood Village Community Council has always strived to preserve the hall’s unique character, which makes it much loved in the village.
The hall is managed on a day-to-day basis by our Site Manager who deals with all our regular groups, private bookings, various events and the management of our facilities and bar stock.
Brewood Village Community Council meets on a regular basis as the “Committee of Management” to look at the overall management and finances of the hall. Plus, most importantly – discuss and explore how the facilities can continue to be developed and enhanced for the benefit of the whole community.
